The transition to clean energy is one of the biggest challenges of our time. Progress is accelerating, but this progress will grid to a halt if the power grid is not upgraded. Building new power lines takes decades. Already around the world, new solar and wind projects are finding it difficult to obtain a grid connection.

Yet our existing grids are not used to their maximum potential. The ability of the power grid to transport power is extremely sensitive to weather conditions. It’s possible to transmit at least one third more power through the existing high-voltage network by accounting with real-time conditions.

GridRaven uses machine learning to create hyper-local weather forecasts that can be used for operating the grid more efficiently and unlocking extra capacity. To do so it's necessary to know the position of every tree, hill and building near power lines. This is where satellite data is crucial.

As part of the ESA Business Incubator, we'll be collaborating with space experts to leverage satellite data for improving the weather forecasting models. The year-long programme provides €60,000 of funding, access to technical expertise and connections to leading companies in the field.

ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) are the largest network of incubators supporting space related start-ups in Europe. We are very thankful for their support.
